Conflicting Views
This week in Social Studies, we studied about the conflict within the United States in the mid 1800's. Florida became a state in 1845.
Heat Transfer
This week in Science class we'll be learning about how heat is transfered.
Heat transfers in 3 ways: conduction, convection, and radiation.
Conduction is when heat transfers by direct touch of an already hot surface.
Convecton is when heat transfers through means of vapor.
Radiation is when the heat from the sun warms up the Earth.
STUDENTS, WHAT OTHER ITEMS AROUND YOUR HOUSE ARE EXAMPLES OF CONVECTION AND CONDUCTION?

The Electromagnet
Friday 11/14/08 the students used some materials to create an electromagnet. Once they created the electromagnet, they predicted how many paper clips it will pick up.
Students: tell your parents the materials you used and how an electromagnet works. Use the picture of an electromagnet to help you remember.

Florida's Climate
This week in Social Studies we've been learning about Florida's climate, what things affect Florida's climate, and the reasons why people from all over the world want to come to Florida. Try and fill in the blank:
_________________: how high or how low the land is
_________________: the line that divides the world into the southern & northern hemispheres.
_________________: the amount of moisture in the air
_________________: the two bodies of water around Florida
STUDENTS:
Tell your parents why people from all over the world want to come to Florida.
Why is it important for others around the world to come to Florida.
Remember we discussed 4 reasons.

Hot Air Balloon!
This video shows students the effects of matter changing phase. Changing phase simply means when matter changes from a solid to a liquid, or from a liquid to a gas. It can also change phases backwards from a gas to a liquid then to a solid. The follow video demonstrates this while at the same time keeping the students aware of the scientific method.
STUDENTS: Show of your learning skills by following the instructions on the video and asking your parents what they think will happen.

Florida's Aquifer
What do you know about Florida's Aquifer? Do you even know what an aquifer is and why it's important to Florida?
I created this video to show students the parts of an aquifer, and to explain to them the importance of it.
STUDENTS: Tell your parents what you learned about aquifers. Remember, watch the video it you need to refresh your memory.

The Results Are In
Here are the results to the polls you participated in.
What is a synonym for Density? weight was correct, 80% of the students got it correct. As a grade it equals a (B)
Where is Florida's Panhandle located? northwest is correct, 66% of the students got it correct. As a grade it equals a (D)
Which is not a property of Matter? physical is correct, 72% of the students got it correct. As a grade it equals a (C)
Students the next polls are in.

Properties of Matter
In class today, we spoke about the Concepts of Matter. As a class we created a Concept Map to illustrate the 4 areas that we will cover about matter.
Students: Write one of the four concepts that we will be learning about.
***hint***look at your concept map.

Welcome!
Welcome students to a new way to show how much you have learned as the weeks fly by.
I have started this blog or online journal, but you are the one who will keep it alive.
There will be videos, pictures, and ideas to respond to.
For those that enjoy typing or being on the internet, this stop is for you.
To leave your comment, just click on the comment link underneath the blog for that week. Type your quick response in the box on the right then click the orange button at the bottom which reads Publish your comment.
I look forward to teaching you new things about Social Studies and Science.
